Starting your career as a Newly Qualified (NQ) lawyer is exciting, but it can also be demanding. The legal sector is fast-paced, with tight deadlines and high expectations. Stress is common, but with the right strategies, you can manage it effectively and thrive in your new role.

Cut back on alcohol and caffeine

It’s tempting to unwind with a glass of wine or rely on coffee to power through long hours, but both can impact your wellbeing. Alcohol disrupts sleep, leaving you tired and less productive, while excessive caffeine can increase cortisol levels and lead to dependency. Limit consumption, especially late in the day to maintain focus and energy.

Build healthy habits

Exercise is a proven stress-buster. Even short workouts, like a quick run or spin class, can boost mood and resilience. Pair this with balanced nutrition: reduce processed foods and include plenty of fruit and vegetables. If time is tight, batch cooking can help you stay on track and reduce daily stress.

Talk to someone

Confiding in friends, family, or your manager can help. They may offer perspective, validation, or advice. Seek support when you need it, don’t isolate yourself or constantly critique on how you should have done better.

Maintain a healthy work-life balance

Make time for hobbies and interests outside of work. This break will help you recharge and maintain perspective. Plus, there is the potential that, through a hobby, you could develop transferable skills that will assist you in your career such as leadership qualities, gaining confidence or developing patience.
