Accounting Manager – Cost Accounting (Manufacturing)
Location: Chicago, IL (Onsite)
Overview
We are partnering with a growing manufacturing organization in Chicago to hire an Accounting Manager with a strong background in cost accounting. This role will lead core accounting operations, oversee financial reporting, and manage a team of two Senior Accountants. The ideal candidate brings deep manufacturing experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and the ability to drive process improvements in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting
Oversee and manage cost accounting functions, including inventory valuation, standard costing, variance analysis, and margin analysis
Review and analyze cost of goods sold (COGS), labor, and overhead variances
Supervise and develop a team of 2 Senior Accountants, providing guidance and performance feedback
Maintain and review general ledger activity, journal entries, and account reconciliations
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Partner with operations and plant leadership to provide financial insights and support decision-making
Lead and support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
Coordinate with external auditors and manage the annual audit process
Strengthen and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains within the accounting function
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
6+ years of progressive accounting experience
Strong cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment required
Proven experience managing or mentoring staff (direct oversight preferred)
Deep understanding of inventory, standard costing, and variance analysis
Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting
Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, JD Edwards, NetSuite, Dynamics)
Advanced Excel skills
CPA preferred
