Accounts Payable Specialist
Location: Portland/Tigard, OR area
Work Arrangement: Hybrid
Compensation: $60,000–$70,000 base salary + 3–6% target bonus
Position Overview
Our client is a growing, nationally established organization seeking an Accounts Payable Specialist to join its collaborative accounting team. This is an excellent opportunity for an AP professional who enjoys more than simply processing invoices and wants to understand the "why" behind transactions.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, naturally curious, and comfortable researching discrepancies, communicating across departments, and taking ownership of complex accounting processes. You'll work closely with the Controller and a broader accounting and finance team while supporting accounts payable, employee expenses, corporate credit cards, and month-end activities.
This position also offers the opportunity to expand into additional general ledger responsibilities as you grow with the organization.
What You’ll Do
Manage employee expense reports for approximately 300 users each month, including researching exceptions and resolving discrepancies
Review and process approximately $150,000 in weekly employee expense activity
Process AP invoices while ensuring appropriate coding, documentation, approvals, and accuracy
Handle more complex invoices that require allocations across numerous locations or cost centers
Manage and reconcile activity for approximately 32 corporate credit cards
Research ad hoc payment and check requests, gathering additional documentation or approvals when necessary
Partner with employees and departments across the organization to resolve expense and payment questions
Apply a strong understanding of the chart of accounts, general ledger coding, debits, and credits
Use Excel to organize and analyze accounting information, including VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, and other data tools
Help identify inefficiencies and contribute ideas for improving AP and expense workflows
Support month-end close activities and maintain accurate financial records
What We’re Looking For
2+ years of accounts payable, accounting support, or related experience
Strong understanding of accounts payable processes
Working knowledge of chart of accounts, GL coding, debits, and credits
Experience reviewing employee expense reports and corporate credit card activity
Strong Excel skills, including the ability to build and work with VLOOKUPs and pivot tables
Experience working within an ERP or cloud-based accounting system
Strong attention to detail and an ability to identify discrepancies before they become larger issues
Comfortable researching transactions and asking follow-up questions rather than simply processing what is submitted
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and evolving environment
Nice to Have
Concur experience
Oracle Fusion Cloud or similar ERP experience
Experience working with multi-location invoice allocations
Power Query experience
Schedule & Work Environment
This is a hybrid position with a regular in-office schedule on Mondays and Wednesdays. Additional onsite presence is typically expected during month-end close, particularly Monday through Wednesday of close week.
Our client places a strong emphasis on collaboration and employee engagement. This is a team where people are encouraged to build relationships across departments, participate in company initiatives, and contribute to the broader culture.
The environment is best suited for someone who enjoys being part of a team, is adaptable when processes change, and is comfortable navigating situations that don't always have a straightforward answer.
Growth Opportunity
While the immediate focus is accounts payable, expenses, and corporate card management, there is opportunity for the position to broaden over time. As the successful candidate develops in the role, they may gain exposure to areas such as:
Fixed assets
Property tax reporting
General ledger accounting
Additional month-end responsibilities
The anticipated progression would occur over approximately the first one to two years, making this an attractive opportunity for an AP professional who eventually wants broader accounting exposure.
