Accounts Payable Supervisor – Merchandise Payables

Our Client

Our client is seeking an experienced Accounts Payable Supervisor – Merchandise Payables to lead the daily operations of a high-volume Accounts Payable team. This role is responsible for overseeing merchandise invoice processing, ensuring timely and accurate payments, driving process improvements, and supporting a collaborative, service-oriented accounting environment.

The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership skills, accounts payable expertise, and the ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced setting while maintaining a high level of accuracy and accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of 4–6 Accounts Payable professionals responsible for merchandise-related processing

  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of merchandise invoices and vendor payments

  • Monitor team performance to maximize discount opportunities and resolve EDI exceptions promptly

  • Maintain working knowledge of purchase order (PO) processing and recommend improvements to internal controls

  • Partner with internal departments to resolve payment discrepancies and invoice issues

  • Provide coaching, training, and ongoing development to team members

  • Ensure efficient utilization of current systems and facilitate training where improvement opportunities are identified

  • Support and enhance automation initiatives related to merchandise processing, including system upgrades and ERP enhancements

  • Track, maintain, and report departmental KPIs and performance metrics

  • Analyze trends and communicate results to management and team members

  • Assist with invoice volume management and issue resolution as needed

  • Participate in annual audit activities and support audit requests

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and professional accounting standards

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred

  • Alternatively, 5+ years of Accounts Payable experience with demonstrated progression and leadership responsibilities

  • Previous supervisory or team lead experience within Accounts Payable strongly preferred

  • Experience working in a high-volume AP environment

  • Experience processing invoices for merchandise and inventory 

Preferred Skills

  • Strong understanding of Accounts Payable processes, purchase orders, invoice matching, and vendor management 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications

  • Experience with ERP systems and accounting software

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Proven leadership, training, and mentoring capabilities
