Payroll Consultant

LHH is partnering with a San Diego–based organization to identify a strong, senior‑level Payroll Consultant to support a high‑volume payroll environment during a period of growth and increased operational demand. This is a hands‑on opportunity for a payroll professional who brings deep technical knowledge, strong communication skills, and a proactive, growth‑oriented mindset. This is a hybrid opportunity offering flexible schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and support high‑volume Domestic payroll processing, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance
Serve as a subject‑matter expert on U.S. payroll regulations, including wage and hour laws, payroll taxes, garnishments, and deductions
Perform payroll reconciliations, audits, and reporting; research and resolve discrepancies efficiently
Partner closely with HR, Finance, and external vendors to address payroll inquiries and ensure smooth payroll operations
Utilize Microsoft Excel extensively for reconciliations, audits, reporting, and analysis involving large data sets
Support or collaborate on international payrolls, as needed, working with internal stakeholders or external providers
Identify opportunities to improve processes, documentation, and controls to enhance efficiency and scalability
Act as a dependable, communicative resource during peak payroll cycles and periods of increased workload
What We’re Looking For
Proven experience in a senior‑level payroll or payroll consulting role, ideally within a high‑volume environment
Strong understanding of U.S. payroll rules and compliance requirements
Advanced or strong Excel skills with the ability to manage and analyze detailed payroll data
Clear, professional communication skills, with the ability to explain payroll concepts to non‑payroll partners
Exposure to or experience supporting international payrolls is a plus
Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and comfortable managing competing priorities
A growth mindset — open to learning, adapting, and contributing to process improvement initiatives
