Technical Writer / Documentation Consultant

Contract Consultant | Remote within the U.S. | Immediate Start

LHH is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Writer / Documentation Consultant to support a large-scale transportation technology program. This is a highly visible consulting engagement requiring a hands-on technical writer who can also provide leadership and structure to a complex documentation initiative.

The ideal candidate is more than a traditional Technical Writer. We are looking for a resource who can quickly understand a sophisticated technical environment, work directly with engineering and program subject matter experts, establish documentation standards, and personally produce high-quality technical deliverables.

The Opportunity

The program has an extensive suite of approximately 40+ technical documents covering software, infrastructure, architecture, networking, hardware, security, integrations, and related systems documentation.

Much of the documentation already exists in draft form. The primary focus will be to:

  • Improve the technical quality and consistency of existing materials

  • Standardize documentation created by multiple contributors

  • Identify and close technical content gaps

  • Manage substantial review and revision cycles

  • Develop remaining net-new documentation

  • Reduce the documentation burden on engineering and technical teams

  • Establish a repeatable documentation framework for the broader program

This position is ideal for a senior technical writer who is comfortable taking ownership of the documentation process rather than waiting for fully developed source material.

Key Responsibilities

  • Personally write, revise, and finalize complex technical documentation related to enterprise systems, software, infrastructure, networking, hardware, cybersecurity, architecture, and integrations.

  • Assess the existing documentation suite and establish practical standards for templates, terminology, structure, formatting, version control, and quality.

  • Lead focused workshops and interviews with engineering, software, infrastructure, and program SMEs to efficiently gather technical information.

  • Transform technically accurate but fragmented material into clear, consistent, professional, and customer-ready documentation.

  • Manage document revision cycles, including organizing stakeholder comments, coordinating responses, updating content, and driving outstanding issues through closure.

  • Identify missing, conflicting, or incomplete information and proactively work with the appropriate stakeholders to resolve gaps.

  • Coordinate technical reviews with SMEs responsible for validating technical accuracy.

  • Provide day-to-day leadership on documentation priorities, workflow, standards, and potential resource requirements.

  • Mentor and coordinate additional technical writers if the documentation team expands.

Representative Documentation

Deliverables may include:

  • Detailed design and architecture documents

  • Data dictionaries

  • Interface and integration documentation

  • Software development plans

  • Technical management plans

  • Security and infrastructure plans

  • Technical specifications

  • Systems, hardware, and networking documentation

  • Formal technical deliverables supporting a complex integrated technology solution

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience producing sophisticated technical documentation for complex enterprise systems, software, infrastructure, architecture, or systems integration environments.

  • Strong systems-level understanding and the ability to explain how components, interfaces, dependencies, and integrations work together within a broader technical solution.

  • Ability to work independently, establish direction, and actively drive a documentation program.

  • Excellent ability to interview time-constrained technical SMEs and translate their knowledge into precise, well-structured documentation.

  • Experience consolidating and standardizing documentation created by multiple technical contributors.

  • Strong revision management, change management, version control, and document-control discipline.

  • Experience managing significant stakeholder or customer feedback through multiple review cycles.

  • Excellent written communication, editing, stakeholder-management, and customer-facing skills.

  • Approximately 5 to 10+ years of relevant technical writing experience preferred, although demonstrated capability and comparable project experience are more important than a specific number of years.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, Visio, and Adobe Acrobat, or comparable documentation tools.

Preferred Experience

Candidates with experience in one or more of the following environments are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Highly scrutinized contractual technical deliverables

  • Formal quality-management or ISO-style documentation environments

  • Transportation technology or intelligent transportation systems

  • Defense or regulated technology environments

  • Government technology programs

  • Large-scale systems integration initiatives

Ideal Candidate

This is not a note-taking, formatting, or documentation-coordinator role.

The successful consultant will be a strong, hands-on technical writer who can quickly understand a complex technology program, establish structure, direct the information-gathering process, and personally deliver high-quality technical documentation.

The right person will be comfortable telling stakeholders:

  • What information is needed

  • Where documentation gaps exist

  • How the documentation process should operate

  • What standards should be followed

  • What a high-quality technical deliverable should look like

At the same time, this individual must be collaborative, pragmatic, and effective working with busy engineering and program teams.

Engagement Details

Employment Type: Contract Consultant
Location: Remote within the United States
Start: Immediate
Schedule: Must be able to collaborate effectively with teams primarily located across U.S. Eastern and Southwestern time zones
Duration: Expected to support the program throughout its documentation lifecycle; duration may evolve based on program needs
Team Structure: Initial focus is on one senior player-coach, with the potential to add additional technical writers as project needs are assessed
Screening: Standard onboarding and background-screening requirements apply

What Success Looks Like

The successful consultant will help establish an environment where:

  • Engineering and infrastructure SMEs spend significantly less time authoring and reworking documents.

  • Technical deliverables have a consistent voice, structure, terminology, and level of quality.

  • Stakeholder comments and revisions are systematically tracked, addressed, and closed.

  • Critical-path documentation continues moving forward without compromising technical accuracy.

  • The program has a repeatable documentation framework that can be leveraged throughout the remainder of the engagement.

Candidate Submission

Interested candidates should provide a current resume highlighting experience with complex technical systems documentation, architecture/design documentation, systems integration, SME-driven content development, and revision management.

Where permitted, candidates are also encouraged to provide sanitized work samples or descriptions of comparable documentation projects, particularly examples involving complex technical environments and content developed from multiple SME inputs.
