M365 Systems Administrator
IT & Digital
Microsoft 365 Systems Engineer
Remote – United States
Direct Hire | $112,000–$130,000
LHH Recruitment Solutions is seeking a hands-on Microsoft 365 Systems Engineer for a fully remote direct-hire opportunity with a growing organization.
This role is focused on a cloud-based Microsoft environment and is ideal for someone with deep hands-on experience administering and improving Microsoft 365 services, including Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Intune, Azure, Teams, Defender, and Purview.
The organization does not operate a traditional on-premises server or Active Directory environment. The successful candidate will be comfortable taking ownership of the Microsoft 365 environment, assessing current configurations, identifying gaps, recommending improvements, and personally implementing changes that improve security, reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
This is not a service desk or routine maintenance position. The team is looking for someone who can combine strong day-to-day Microsoft 365 administration with project ownership, technical decision-making, documentation, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
Administer, configure, and improve Microsoft 365 services across identity, collaboration, endpoint management, security, compliance, and cloud operations.
Serve as a primary technical owner for:
Microsoft Entra ID
Exchange Online
SharePoint Online
OneDrive
Microsoft Teams
Intune
Microsoft Defender
Microsoft Purview
Microsoft Azure
Assess the existing Microsoft 365 environment and identify opportunities to improve security, reliability, governance, scalability, automation, and supportability.
Lead technical projects from requirements gathering and design through implementation, testing, documentation, handoff, and ongoing support.
Manage identity and access controls, including Conditional Access, MFA, privileged access, SSO, and role-based access controls.
Configure and maintain endpoint management policies, device compliance, application deployment, patching, and related Intune services.
Support Microsoft Azure services related to identity, governance, security, and operations.
Troubleshoot complex issues across Microsoft 365 services, users, endpoints, applications, and integrations.
Develop runbooks, SOPs, knowledge base articles, and technical documentation.
Train junior IT and help desk staff and provide effective knowledge transfer for implemented solutions.
Identify opportunities for PowerShell, automation, and process improvement that reduce manual work and recurring support issues.
Communicate technical recommendations, risks, project updates, and priorities to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Support occasional after-hours maintenance, upgrades, and priority incidents.
Qualifications
5+ years of hands-on experience administering, designing, implementing, and supporting Microsoft 365 cloud environments.
Strong recent hands-on experience with most or all of the following:
Entra ID
Exchange Online
SharePoint Online
OneDrive
Microsoft Teams
Intune
Microsoft Defender
Microsoft Purview
Microsoft Azure
Proven experience personally designing and implementing Microsoft 365 solutions, not solely supporting environments built by others.
Demonstrated ability to assess an existing Microsoft 365 environment, identify gaps, recommend improvements, and implement changes.
Experience taking technical projects from requirements gathering through implementation, documentation, handoff, and support.
Strong experience with identity and access management, endpoint management, security, compliance, and production troubleshooting.
Experience with Conditional Access, MFA, SSO, privileged access, RBAC, and related identity controls.
Strong documentation, communication, organization, and follow-through skills.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of technical outcomes within a small IT team.
PowerShell or other scripting/automation experience preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Relevant Microsoft certifications are a plus.
What Success Looks Like
The successful candidate will be able to clearly demonstrate Microsoft 365 environments and solutions they have personally administered, improved, designed, and implemented.
They will be comfortable inheriting an existing cloud environment, evaluating how it is configured, identifying areas of risk or inefficiency, prioritizing improvements, and driving those changes through completion.
They should also understand that a successful implementation includes documentation, knowledge transfer, and making the environment easier for the broader IT team to support after the work is complete.
