Job Title: Director of Accounting and Finance
Location: Albuquerque, NM
Job Type: Full-Time, In-Office
Salary: $100,000 – $125,000 per year


About the Organization

Our client is an educational-focused non-profit organization committed to empowering students and strengthening communities through high-quality education and support services. They are currently seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Accounting and Finance to join the team and help drive financial excellence across the organization.


Position Overview

The Director of Accounting and Finance will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and will be responsible for leading the organization’s financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires daily in-office presence supervising a team of 6. This opportunity offers an exceptional and comprehensive benefits package.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, fund accounting, and grant tracking

  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (FASB, GAAP) and IRS regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations

  • Manage the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor budget-to-actual performance across departments and programs

  • Coordinate and support the annual audit and preparation of Form 990

  • Maintain and improve internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures

  • Supervise finance staff and support cross-functional collaboration with program and development teams

  • Oversee restricted and unrestricted fund management, donor reporting, and grant compliance

  • Provide financial analysis and forecasting to support strategic planning and decision-making

  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee


Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Controller or Director of Finance

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting

  • Advanced degree in Accounting required

  • CPA strongly preferred; CMA also considered

  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting standards

  • Experience with fund accounting, grant compliance, and donor reporting

  • Strong experience with financial statement preparation and general ledger management

  • Proficiency in accounting software and systems
