Job Title: Controller – Commercial Construction
Location: Austin, TX
Employment Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Compensation: Competitive base salary + bonus + benefits
About the Opportunity
We’re partnered with a growing commercial construction company that works with some super cool Austin companies who is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting operations. This is a key leadership role responsible for driving accuracy, compliance, and process improvement across all aspects of project accounting. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable partnering with field and finance teams alike.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, job costing, progress billing, and revenue recognition
Review project billings and change orders to ensure proper sales tax treatment and accurate schedule of values
Ensure proper job setup and chart of accounts mapping in Viewpoint (or similar construction ERP)
Lead monthly close process and job cost analysis, ensuring alignment between cost reports and billing
Coordinate with project managers to ensure updated projections, job cost adjustments, and phase accuracy
Establish and enforce timely invoice approval processes to prevent cost/billing misalignment
Manage job closeout procedures once retainage is collected
Prepare financial reports and support annual audit process
Identify and implement process improvements to increase financial efficiency and control
Supervise and mentor a small accounting team
Qualifications
7+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in the commercial construction industry
Strong understanding of sales tax as it applies to construction billing and cost tracking
Hands-on experience with Viewpoint Vista (or comparable construction ERP software)
Proven background in job costing, WIP schedules, schedule of values, and project accounting workflows
Ability to lead accounting operations and partner cross-functionally with project and executive teams
Strong Excel skills and comfort working with large data sets
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)
