Job Title: Patient Accounting Representative
Location: Onsite - Kahului, HI
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Contract Duration: 6 months with possibility of extending and/or converting
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Post-high school coursework in accounting or certification as a Medical Biller.
Experience: Two (2) years of collections experience in the healthcare field.
Technical Skills: Familiarity with medical terminology, CPT-4, ICD-9-CM coding, and mainframe collections applications.
Software Knowledge: Proficiency in Outlook, Microsoft Office, Epic, and Change Health Care.
Other: 10-key by touch and experience with database applications.
Required Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent (Required).
Experience: Minimum of one (1) year in collections or medical insurance claims processing (Required).
Skills:
Strong clerical and basic accounting skills.
Ability to negotiate and motivate debtors to pay.
Knowledge of billing and insurance claim procedures.
Proficiency in adaptability, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and teamwork.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Job Summary
Under indirect supervision, the Patient Accounting Representative is responsible for processing insurance claims, reports, and billing for medical disability benefits. This role includes handling applications from medical/life insurance and supplemental benefits, obtaining background information, and making arrangements for payments. The representative ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, third-party payer guidelines, and internal policies while maximizing collections and maintaining excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Process insurance claims, reports, and billing documentation.
Review and control requests for medical records and documentation.
Audit and summarize patient medical records for claim processing.
Follow up with insurance companies, agencies, and patients regarding claims and payments.
Prepare and audit visit records, applying appropriate billing codes.
Maintain open communication with insurance carriers, intermediaries, and internal teams.
Collect outstanding balances from third-party payers, patients, and guarantors.
Contact debtors via phone or correspondence to arrange payment collections.
Ensure compliance with state and federal credit and collection regulations.
Document collection activities within the internal system.
Conduct skip tracing to update patient demographics for rebilling.
Operate standard office equipment and refer complex issues to a supervisor.
