Position Summary:

Senior Accountant (HYBRID)

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in the financial reporting process by preparing, analyzing, and reconciling financial data with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness. This individual works closely with the Assistant Controller, Controller, and other members of the finance team, collaborating across departments to provide financial insights and support decision-making.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to operate independently in a deadline-driven environment. They should also possess strong communication skills and a proactive mindset for continuous process improvement.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Analyze transactions across various systems to ensure proper accounting treatment, classification, completeness, and accuracy in accordance with GAAP.

  • Prepare and present detailed variance analyses on assigned departmental profit and loss statements, including comparison to budgets and prior periods, and articulate the financial impact of operational activities.

  • Participate in monthly close activities, including preparation and posting of adjusting journal entries and reclassifications.

  • Reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts monthly, investigate variances, and resolve discrepancies using a methodical and audit-ready approach.

  • Partner with department leaders to understand business operations and financial drivers, becoming a key liaison between Finance and operational teams.

  • Act as a subject matter expert for assigned business areas, including understanding contractual and vendor obligations, labor costs, and benefits.

  • Research and resolve technical accounting issues; provide recommendations and documentation for accounting policies and procedures.

  • Support special projects and cross-functional initiatives to improve financial systems and reporting processes.

  • Contribute to continuous process improvement efforts and suggest automation opportunities.

  • Assist with year-end audit processes, including the preparation of supporting documentation and financial statement disclosures.


Specialized Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Payroll and Accounting teams to ensure accurate payroll-related accounting, including labor capitalization and union-related considerations.

  • Serve as an internal expert on capitalization policies and partner with the Capital Projects team to ensure proper accounting treatment of capital expenditures.


Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (required)

Experience:

  • Corporate accounting experience is a plus

  • CPA designation is a plus

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and understanding of governmental or nonprofit accounting standards is beneficial

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to independently manage tasks and meet tight deadlines

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Detail-oriented and capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial systems

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Willingness to take ownership of assigned areas and drive continuous improvement
