LHH Recruitment Solutions is partnering with a non-profit client to hire a Staff Accountant for a contract role in San Francisco, California. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the integrity of financial operations and compliance with GAAP and fund accounting principles. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional with extensive experience in the non-profit sector. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for general ledger management, grant reporting, budgeting support, and audit preparation.
PLEASE NOTE: All duties for this role are performed at the client’s headquarters in San Francisco, California (SF Financial Distrcit)
Key Responsibilities:
Manage and maintain the general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
Prepare financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders
Track and report on restricted/unrestricted funds, grants, and contracts in compliance with donor and regulatory requirements
Assist with the preparation of the annual operating budget and forecasts
Lead audit preparations and liaise with external auditors for annual financial and compliance audits
Reconcile bank and investment accounts
Oversee payroll journal entries and related tax filings in coordination with HR
Support the preparation of IRS Form 990 and other required filings
Maintain accounting policies and internal controls
Provide financial analysis to support strategic decision-making
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
Minimum 5–7 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in the non-profit sector
Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting (FASB standards)
Experience with grant and contract reporting
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud) and Microsoft Excel
Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment
Familiarity with federal and state compliance requirements for non-profits
